Frequently Asked Questions — Shower Chairs

What is the difference between a rolling shower chair and a regular shower bench?

A rolling shower chair (also called a shower commode chair) has caster wheels so it can be rolled directly into the shower — ideal for users who cannot stand or step in safely. A regular shower bench or bath seat is stationary and is used by someone who can walk into the shower but needs to sit while bathing. For wheelchair users or those with very limited mobility, a rolling shower chair is almost always the better choice.

How do I choose the right seat height for a rolling shower chair?

Proper seat height is critical for safe transfers. Measure the distance from the floor to the back of the user’s knee while seated in their wheelchair or on a flat surface. That measurement should match or be within an inch of the shower chair seat height. Most of our chairs are height-adjustable across a range (typically 17"–21"). If you need help, read our blog post on determining rolling shower chair seat height, or call us at 800-413-3302.

Can shower chairs be used over a toilet as a commode chair?

Yes — most of our rolling shower chairs are designed as commode chairs as well. They feature an open-front or hygiene opening in the seat and can be wheeled over a toilet for toileting, then directly into the shower for bathing. This eliminates the need for multiple transfers, which greatly reduces fall risk. Look for models labeled “shower commode chair” in our lineup.

What materials are shower chairs made from — will they rust in the shower?

Our shower chairs are constructed from rust-resistant materials specifically chosen for wet environments. Aluminum-frame chairs (such as our Healthline EZEE series) will not rust. PVC-frame chairs (IPU and MJM brands) are also non-corrosive and easy to clean. All casters are designed to resist moisture. None of our shower chairs should be used with steel components that could corrode.

Do you carry shower chairs for very large or heavy users?

Yes — we carry a dedicated range of bariatric shower chairs with weight capacities from 400 lbs up to 900 lbs. Visit our Bariatric & Obesity Care category for chairs specifically engineered with reinforced frames, wider seats, and heavy-duty casters for larger users. Standard shower chairs in our lineup typically support 250–350 lbs.

Are there shower chairs for children or pediatric users?

Yes — we carry a dedicated Pediatric Shower Chairs category with chairs sized and designed specifically for children with mobility or developmental challenges. These feature appropriate seat dimensions, adjustable heights, and safety features suited to pediatric use. Call us to discuss your child’s specific needs and we will help match you with the right product.
