Bariatric Basics
What qualifies as a bariatric shower chair?
A bariatric shower chair is specifically engineered to safely support users who exceed the weight capacity of standard shower chairs (typically 250–350 lbs). Bariatric chairs feature reinforced PVC or aluminum frames, wider seats for comfort and stability, heavy-duty hospital-grade casters, and higher weight ratings — from 400 lbs all the way to 900 lbs on our heaviest model. They also have wider hygiene openings and more robust armrests.
What is the maximum weight capacity available in your bariatric shower chairs?
Our heaviest bariatric shower chair — the IPU 900 Pound Weight Capacity Rolling Shower Chair — supports users up to 900 lbs. We also carry models rated for 500 lbs and 700 lbs to give you options across the weight range.
All models in our Bariatric & Obesity Care category include free freight shipping and are made in the USA.
Choosing the Right Chair
What features should I look for in a bariatric shower chair?
Key features to evaluate include:
- Weight capacity — allow a margin above the user's actual weight
- Seat width — wider is more comfortable and stable
- Armrest padding and swing-away capability
- Caster size and locking mechanism
- Corrosion-resistant frame material
- Adjustable height range
- Whether a hygiene opening is required for commode use

Do bariatric shower chairs fit through standard bathroom doorways?
This is an important consideration. Bariatric chairs are wider than standard chairs and may not fit through a standard 24"–28" bathroom doorway. Most of our bariatric models have an outer seat width of 22"–28" and require at least a 28"–30" doorway clearance.
If your bathroom has a narrow door, contact us before ordering so we can advise on the best fit for your space.
Do you carry reclining bariatric shower chairs?
Yes. We carry the Bariatric Reclining Shower Chair (500 lb capacity) with a 2-position recliner and 3-position leg rest, as well as the Rebotec Reclining Shower Chair (440 lb capacity) with adjustable tilt and headrest. Reclining shower chairs are ideal for users who cannot maintain an upright seated position, or for caregivers assisting with hair washing and personal care.
Brands & Insurance
What is the difference between the IPU and MJM bariatric shower chairs?
Both Innovative Products Unlimited (IPU) and MJM International manufacture high-quality PVC bariatric shower chairs made in the USA. IPU chairs in our bariatric range tend to offer higher weight capacities (up to 900 lbs) and are known for heavy-duty casters and solid construction for institutional settings. MJM chairs emphasize ergonomic comfort features like elongated soft seats, mesh backs, and caregiver-friendly push handles. We carry parts for both brands, so ongoing maintenance is easy.
Is bariatric equipment covered by insurance or Medicare?
Coverage varies by insurance plan and diagnosis. Some bariatric durable medical equipment (DME) may be covered under Medicare Part B or private insurance with a physician's prescription and medical necessity documentation. We recommend contacting your insurance provider directly and asking your physician about a DME referral. We are happy to provide product documentation and specifications to support your claim. Call us at 800-413-3302 for assistance.
