Bollards and Posts

Frequently Asked Questions – Bollards and Posts

Basics

What is an ADA bollard or post?

It's a freestanding post that holds the push-plate actuator for an automatic door opener. When there's no wall, railing, or column in the right spot to mount a push plate, a bollard puts the actuator exactly where it needs to be — within reach and clear of the door swing.

When do I need one instead of a wall-mounted push plate?

Whenever the approach to the door has no suitable mounting surface. Common situations include glass vestibules and storefronts, wide sidewalk approaches, parking lot entries, and any door where the wall is too far from the accessible route for someone in a wheelchair to reach the plate and still clear the door as it opens.

Choosing the Right Post

What sizes and styles are available?

Careprodx carries both round posts (38") and square bollards (42" × 6"), in single push-plate and double push-plate configurations. Double-plate models are useful where the actuator needs to be reachable from two directions, or at two different heights.

Are they wired or wireless?

Both. Our posts come ready for a direct-wire setup, or can be paired with a digital transmitter for wireless operation. Wireless is often the simpler choice on retrofits where running conduit to the post would mean cutting concrete.

Materials & Installation

What materials and finishes are available, and how are they installed?

Posts come in aluminum or stainless steel, with mirror or satin finish options. They're designed to surface-mount on concrete or a similar hard surface, and include the mounting plate and escutcheon.

One installation note worth passing to your contractor: don't pre-drill the mounting holes before the post arrives — verify the actual hole pattern against the delivered unit first.

How do I mount card readers or other hardware?

It depends on the material. Aluminum posts can be cut out or drilled in the field, so your contractor can add a card reader, keypad, or similar hardware on site.

Stainless steel is harder to modify — for those, either send us a drawing of your cutout and we'll do it at the factory for a $75 charge, or make sure your contractor is equipped to cut and drill stainless steel.

Cost

How much do they cost?

Bollards and posts in this category run roughly $519 to $678 depending on size, plate configuration, and finish options such as the stainless escutcheon finish plate.
